Role Objectives:

The Implementation Project Manager is responsible for the success, readiness, and risk management of new and existing client implementations. This role functions as the client governance lead during onboarding and protects both client outcomes and Payroll Experts operational stability. The PM manages executive and system administrator-level client stakeholders, proactively addresses implementation risk, and has authority to recommend adjustments to implementation scope or timing, including go-live delay recommendations when client or operational readiness concerns exist.

Key Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Lead implementation conversations with executive and business owner stakeholders
  • Schedule and lead client and team cadence calls for applicable projects
  • Establish and enforce client expectations and responsibilities
  • Address resistance, conflict, and scope challenges
  • Deliver difficult messages regarding readiness, compliance, or required changes
  • Identify implementation risks early
  • Develop mitigation plans
  • Monitor readiness indicators
  • Recommend go-live delays when readiness risks exist
  • Prevent escalations and implementation failure
  • Determine appropriate implementation approach based on client complexity
  • Guide Sales and internal teams on client readiness and project requirements
  • Coordinate cross-functional alignment across departments
  • Resolve internal workflow conflicts impacting delivery
  • Protect downstream service teams from preventable implementation issues
  • Support onboarding and training of implementation staff
  • Participate in improving implementation playbooks and tools
  • Lead post-implementation retrospectives


Required Experience & Education
  • 4+ years of experience in HCM, payroll, HRIS, SaaS implementation, project management, or a related client-facing operations role.
  • 2+ years of experience leading complex client implementations, strategic accounts, or cross-functional projects.
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with executive-level stakeholders, business owners, HR leaders, payroll administrators, or operational decision-makers.
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining timelines, scope, and client expectations.
  • Proven ability to identify project risks, develop mitigation plans, and drive projects to successful completion.
  • Experience facilitating difficult conversations involving scope changes, implementation readiness concerns, project delays, or escalated client situations.
  • Experience coordinating work across multiple departments and influencing outcomes without direct management authority.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of payroll, HR, workforce management, and HCM technology solutions, including how implementation decisions impact compliance, service delivery, user adoption, and long-term client success.
  • Project governance and implementation leadership skills, including management of timelines, priorities, resources, stakeholder expectations, readiness assessments, and go-live decisions.
  • Ability to identify implementation risks, evaluate operational and compliance impacts, develop mitigation plans, and drive issues to resolution.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively engage executive stakeholders, business owners, HR leaders, payroll administrators, and internal teams.
  • Strong relationship management skills, including the ability to influence stakeholders without direct authority, navigate conflict, establish appropriate expectations, and deliver difficult messages professionally and constructively.
  • Ability to coordinate cross-functional teams and implementation stakeholders to ensure project dependencies, custom reporting requests, and integration activities remain aligned with project timelines and client expectations.
  • Ability to maintain visibility into implementation milestones, custom report requests, and integration dependencies, and effectively communicate project status, risks, and next steps to clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and decision-making abilities, including the capability to interpret project health indicators, evaluate complex situations, and recommend solutions that balance client needs with business objectives.
  • Familiarity with change management principles and the ability to guide clients through organizational, operational, and technology-related transitions.
  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations involving escalations, competing priorities, tight deadlines, and complex client implementations.

Preferred Skills
  • Professional certifications such as PMP, CAPM, CPP, FPC, CSM, UKG certifications, or comparable project management, payroll, or HRIS credentials are preferred but not required.

  • Prior client-facing or consultative experience in an ASO or PEO services environment.

Your base pay is dependent upon your skills, education, qualifications, professional experience, and location. In addition to base pay, some roles are eligible for variable compensation, commission, and/or annual bonus based on your individual performance and/or the company's performance.
